Athletics NI Awards for CoLAC
Thu 20 October 2011--admin
Athletics NI hosted their annual awards evening in the Les Jones room at the Mary Peters Track last night, with City of Lisburn AC featuring amongst the prizes which recognised successes within our sport this year.
ANI President John Glover was the host for the evening while the presentations were made by a very youthful-looking Lynn Davies (Olympic long jump champion from Tokyo 1964) who gave an entertaining and inspirational talk beforehand on British Olympic champions.
Wendy Phillips collected the Development Coach of the Year award for her efforts within the club which have seen high jump become a very strong event for us this year. The Power of Ten rankings show 5 Lisburn girls in the top 10 in NI at U13 (including the top 3) with 3 of the top 4 boys in the same age-group from Lisburn.
At U15 level Lisburn has 5 girls in the NI top ten lists with Andrew Hutchinson’s splendid 1.80m making him top U15 boy in NI. In older age groups Anna McIlmoyle and Adam Hill also enjoyed good seasons under the guidance of Wendy.
City of Lisburn AC was awarded the Junior Club of the Year prize after a tremendous season. This included superb medal hauls at the local championships both indoor and outdoor and an excellent showing at the NI multi-event championships.
However the highlight of season for everyone of course was the performance of the whole squad in Birmingham at the UK Young Athlete Finals where the team represented NI athletics in great style.
Three of the athletes who were key to the success of the Young Athletes League squad collected the prize on behalf of their team-mates – Roseanna McGuckian, Madison Bowyer and Megan Marrs.
Awards were also made to the City of Lisburn AC athletes who broke NI records this year namely Ciara Mageean at 1500m (senior and junior) plus Amy Foster’s 100m and 200m senior records. Both athletes of course also enjoyed success on the international stage this year.
Thanks to Athletics NI for a very enjoyable evening.
