Last weekend saw four City of Lisburn Junior athletes recognised at two different ceremonies, all receiving awards for their 2011 seasons. Ciara Mageean picked up one of the major awards at the AAI National Athletics Awards in association with Woodie’s DIY and Tipperary Crystal. This took place on Saturday 12th of November in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin.
Ciara was named as the Junior Athlete of the Year after a season which saw her win a silver medal at the European Junior Championships in Estonia, plus setting a new Irish Junior 1500m record of 4:07.45 at the IMC Grand Prix final in Birmingham. This time ranked her second fastest on the World Junior rankings over that distance this year.
Meanwhile in Monaghan the previous evening, three young City of Lisburn AC athletes received awards after their own good seasons in 2011, being named as Ulster Athletics Council Juvenile Stars. Ben Fisher was the county winner in the Boys 12-15 age group with Roseanna McGuckian making it a Lisburn double by winning the vote in the girls 12-15 age-group. In the Girls 16-19 age-group Libby Rose was named winner.
Each of the three athletes were judged to be the outstanding athletes in their category at the NI and Ulster age-group championships 2011 based on their indoor and outdoor performances combined, all winning multiple medals and titles. The awards were presented by Athletics Ireland President Liam Hennessey.
Congratulations to all four on their acheivements this year and their latest awards.
