Edwards & Co Meet 4
Tue 28 June 2011--admin
Despite this being a very busy period in the season (which is taking it’s toll on this report writer if not the athletes!) City of Lisburn AC was out in force to support the 4th in the series of Lagan Valley / Edwards & Co meets last Thursday. Conditions early on were atrocious but they did improve slightly later in the evening. Again there were successes across the age-groups and events with a great tally of 26 medals secured by the Lisburn squad.
U11 “Minis” – Another fine run by Grace Hilman in the 100m for silver confirmed her potential yet again while Erin Fisher also took silver in the long jump after a superb 3.08m PB.
U13 – The girls’ 1500m in this age-group was one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the evening with the in-form Rebekah Douglas facing our other middle-distance star Madison Bowyer. From the gun the two girls pulled away from the rest of the field and while ultimately Madison pushed on for another good win by three seconds it wasn’t without being pushed hard by Rebekah who was on her shoulder for much of the race. Caitlin Lyness had a great run for the bronze to secure a Lisburn clean sweep. In the shot our girls also performed strongly with only a Newcastle athlete preventing another clean sweep. Alix Galbraith’s opening 7.35m was enough to win by nearly a metre while Lauren Rea in 3rd missed silver by just 1cm with her 6.40m. Cameron Kelly had another productive evening, winning the shot with a fine 8.69m effort and also taking silver in the 100m in 14.11 sec.
U15 – The stand-out sprinters in this age-group were Lisburn’s Katie Larmour and another in-from athlete, Jessica McMaster who won gold and silver respectively in the 100m with electric-timed PB’s of 13.66s and 13.67s. Ben Fisher is another to come into great form late in the season with his 13.56s an electric-timed PB also. In the 1500m races Jonny Whan had a great run to win comfortably in 4:38.7 sec while the consistent Zoe Carruthers placed 2nd in the girls’ 1500m in 5:08. In the high jump events Megan Marrs was second while Andrew Hutchinson and Sam Wallace made it a Lisburn 1-2 for the boys. Andrew later threw 24 metres in the javelin – it wasn’t exactly pretty but it was good enough to win!! Cameron Powell was second in the javelin just a metre behind Andrew.
U17 – Stewart McEwan placed 2nd in the 100m in 12.15s to continue his current good form, while in the girls’ shot Amanda Mitchell just edged club-mate Ruth Hewlett out of the gold medal position in a good competition. Ruth also took bronze in the hammer with a throw of 22.94m.
Senior – Adam Hill won the long jump with a 5.51m leap while Kathryn Wallace won two medals. the first was another good throw of 34m exactly for 3rd in the hammer. However the highlight was the shot where she exceeded her lifetime best and the 8-metre barrier with all three throws for a best of 8.34m! To throw over 8 metres was another one of Kathyrn’s pre-season objectives ticked off so the sights are going to have to be set a bit higher for next season (and indeed the rest of this one!). Well done Kathryn!
