At the recent Irish Age Groups Championships in Tullamore, there were many successes for the eighteen City of Lisburn Athletic Club athletes competing there.
Ruth Gillespie was arguably the ATHLETE of the DAY, winning the Senior Girls 3000m in a Personal Best of 10m 23s and 3 hours later adding a superb 1500m Silver in the stifling heat with another PB of 4m47.52s! An excellent performance for a very dedicated athlete. Rachel Pearson of Friends School Lisburn finished sixth in the same 3000m as her training partner Ruth.
Laura Loughlin also doubled up to good effect, taking Gold in the Triple Jump with a PB equalling jump of 10.67m.and was also fifth in the Long Jump. Another Senior medal almost came for Intermediate Mark Atkinson running in the 4x100m relay though his Grosvenor Grammar team lost out by one 1/100th. to Campbell College! His City of Lisburn sprint partner Fiyin Olayisaide took Silver in the Inters? 100m in 11.21s.and anchored the Inst Academy team along with Matthew Kilpatrick to win the 4x100m. Recent club recruits Patrick McGlinchy won the Inter Pole Vault with not one but two PBs, 3.70m being his best and Josh. Williamson improved his PB a further 1.5secs to record 50.75s, for his Inter 400m Silver ; superb when you consider he is only 15 and has another year in the age group!
CoL Inter girls had many successes. Sam Miskelly took second in the 80mH in 12.36s with Debbie Porteous also second in the Triple Jump in 10.40m. Rachel Gibson took Bronze in the 800m while a below par Linzi Herron was third in the High Jump and was also fourth in the Long Jump with a PB of 5.31m. Rebecca Hedley was close to her best in the Discus with 25.96m for fourth Sophie Brow was seventh in the Triple Jump joining Sam and Junior Megan McKelvey for fourth in the relay.
Megan, a first year Junior was a credible seventh in the 75mH, while Laura McKeown added to her medal tally with Silver in Junior Long Jump with a best of 4.94m and assisted her Strathearn School team to Silver in the 4x100m relay. Emily Mills also in her first year ran the 1500m in 5.10.11s for sixth.
