NI Senior 200m record for Amy /Ciara 4th in Turkey

Massive congratulations to our own Amy Foster who finally broke the 33 year old NI 200 metres record when representing Ireland in yesterday’s First League of the European Athletics Championships in Izmir, Turkey.
Amy’s time of 23.58 secs into a headwind placed her 6th in her race and takes 0.04 secs off Linda McCurry’s 1978 record set in the Edmonton Commonwealth Games. This record was one of the longest-standing NI Senior marks, which several generations of top female NI sprinters have failed to beat, so Amy deserves full credit for her superb achievement. She backed up this run with 4th place in the 100 metres in a time of 11.60 secs which was marginally short of her PB. Form like this will see her in contention for an individual spot for the World Championships this summer.
Still in Turkey, in the 1500m Ciara Mageean had to settle for 4th place in 4.27.20 after a tactical race where no-one was prepared to inject any notable pace until the last lap. Ciara of course herself broke a NI Senior record last summer in the 1500m in Canada at the World Juniors but this race was a very solid performance as she stepped up to Senior competition in the Irish vest.
