On a great day’s athletics at Antrim at the NI Championships incorporating both the Senior and “older” age-groups there were many strong performances from City of Lisburn athletes.
On the track Kelly McNeice, who is hopefully Delhi-bound, bagged the NI Senior 800m title in a straightforward 2m 09s with Rachel Gibson taking bronze. Team-mate Ciara Mageean should also be on the plane to India in October and she showed her class again in winning the Senior 1500m in 4m 20s.
In the sprints Laura McBurney was 4th in the women’s 100m race (but 1st U18) in a fast but windy 12.41s. In the 200m she finished 3rd (and 2nd U18) for a good afternoon’s work. Erin McIlveen and Lyndsey Monteith both ran well in a 400m final where standards locally are very high just now.
Brendan Murphy was 4th in the Senior Men’s 400mH in 55.82s
In the field, Chris Reynolds was the only athlete over 40m in the discus and is NI Senior discus champion (40.02m). Well done also to James Megarity who was over 12 metres again for silver in the U18 shot.
In the Women’s triple jump competition, Holly Johnston was 1st U18 with 10.69m ahead of Karyn Dummigan who was 1st U19 with 10.47m. Karyn was also 1st U19 in the Long Jump with a 5.16m right on the legal limit of 2.0m/s. Congratulations to Linzi Herron who took bronze in the Senior event in a good 5.56m which was also legal.
Finally, recent Irish Schools medallist Caris Greenwood entered the Senior discus and took 4th with 28.20m.
Well done to all CoL athletes perfoming on the day.
