A coach load of City of Lisburn athletes made the journey to Templemore Sports Complex, Londonderry on Saturday for round 2 of the young athletes’ league. Conditions were warm and sunny, although a breeze into the faces of the sprinters prevented fast times.
A very strong Lisburn U13 girls team had a string of victories in both track and field. Promising throwers Lauren Rea and Jodie Savage won the A and B javelin. Jodie also took the honours in the B shot with Lauren improving in each round to take second in a close competition in the A shot. Thereze Hilman won the A 75m and B High Jump, while Katie Larmour had a fine win in the longer sprint. Zoe Crothers’ convincing win in the 1200m was amongst the outstanding track performances of the day and Madison Boyer ran well to take the B race and secure full points for CoL. Jessica McMaster and Katie Larmour produced another A and B double win in the long jump and the relay squad put the icing on the cake with a superb run for first place.
There were also many Lisburn highlights within the the U15 girls competition, led off by Jane Atkinson winning the 100m plus the high jump with a 1.45m PB. The reliable Erin Quinn and Aoibhan McManus secured maximum points with convincing wins in the 200m while Rebecca Harvey was a class apart in the 1500m, which she backed up with a useful 2nd on her debut in the A javelin. Aoibhan and Erin had comfortable victories in the A and B long jump despite a headwind playing havoc with their run-ups. The versatile Caitlin Rose was one of the busiest athletes on the day. She backed up her win in the B High Jump with 2nd in the B sprint and the A discus plus a fine leg in the relay where the girls won their match race but will get even faster with more changeover practice.
In the U17 girls Libby Rose and Katie McComb took double honours in the 100m, with Katie bouncing back from a fall in the 200m when well clear to post a very fast 100m time of 13.4 into the wind. Libby won the 300m and also took 2nd in the shot. Kathryn Wallace’s performance to win the B shot was remarkable for improving a full metre from her round 1 victory at Antrim.
The boys team again was much smaller in numbers but there were many excellent results. Jack McComb in the U13 boys had a comfortable win in the long jump to go with two 2nds in the sprints.
In the U15 boys’ sprints Sam Wallace and Connor Farr won the A 100 and 200m respectively. Dominic Martin had a strong run for 2nd in the 400m while Ross Curry took 3rd in the 1500m A race. Sam Wallace along with Caelen Tyler gained valuable points in the field events, but the highlight in this age group was an excellent Lisburn victory in a tight 4x100m relay.
In the U17 boys, Kadum Hasson had a couple of 3rds in the spirints with brother Malik taking 3rd in the A 1500m. In the field Kadum’s win in the B long jump was the highlight. Adam Hill was another busy CoL athlete gaining useful points for 3rd in A string 200m, Long Jump and Javelin.
Overall this team performance consolidates City of Lisburn’s 5th place after 2 rounds and means as things stand the club is in a qualifiying position for the 31 July final, although another big effort in Round 3 will be needed to ensure our place there.
