On a beautiful sunny but absolutely freezing day at Greenmount International Antrim, City of Lisburn?s athletes excelled on the new cross country course venue, parts of which were thick with sticky mud.
The Under 13 girls? race over 1800m was a bit long for Rebecca Harvey and Rose Jackson but they managed well with Rebecca finishing with a flurry in 16th place and Rose in 37th. The next race, Boys? Under 13, over the same distance, Jonathan Whan ran well to finish up in 15th position.
The Girls? Under 15 race over 3600m saw the Lisburn athletes pick up 2nd team prize with great performances from Katie Conn in 9th place followed by Francesca Brown in 11th and Erin Carruthers in 20th. Boys Under 17 race was over 3 laps covering a distance of 5600m, saw Gerrard Gargan learn the craft of racing over the country. He tussled and challenged and eventually beat another compeditor to finish 43rd.
The girls Under 17 race was combined with the IAAF Junior Women (U20) turned out to be a great challenge for Ciara Mageean (U17) with the top three pulling away from the rest of the field, with three continuing to pull away from the rest of the field, Ciara with Louise Small (U20) and Beth Carter (U17). It was only in the last 800m that Louise pulled away from Ciara to win the Under 20?s and Ciara winning the Under 17?s. Next in for Lisburn was Rachel Gibson (U20) in 25th followed closely by Emily Mills (U17) showing a return to form. Finally, the vets race over 7400m Sean McGurnaghan and Eric Frizzell were competing at the back of the field due to lack of race fitness. Sean finished happy enough in 68th place with Eric behind in 70th.
