AAI league – Girls make Final!
Tue 20 July 2010--admin
The Senior girls squad ensured City of Lisburn will be represented in the final of the Woodies DIY All Ireland Premier league after another good team performance in Athlone on Sunday. Conditions were damp with rain for most of the day and a slight headwind in the home straight which negated the fast Mondo surface at this Round 2 match at the new facility at the Athlone Institute of Technology. The girls finished 3rd on the day of the 6 teams at this match and qualified in 6th place overall for the final on 14 August.
On the track there was just one victory from Leigh Whiteside in the 200m in 25.89s (-1.3w). Emma Docherty was 2nd in the walk and Leigh also took 2nd in the 400m in 57.64s. The girls also took 2nd in the 4x100m relay. Rachel Gibson tackled the middle distance double and secured good points with two 4th places, while Heather McClarnon was 6th in the 3000m.
Libby Rose was the busiest athlete of the day with 3 events plus the relay. She made a very promising debut over 400mH in 69.14s for 3rd, gained the same place in the sprint hurdles and managed 3rd again in the javelin with a 26.86m throw.
It was a Lisburn clean sweep in the jumps with Karyn Dumigan winning the Triple Jump in 10.63m and Linzi Herron winning a superb Long Jump / High Jump double. Kathryn Wallace threw well for 3rd in the hammer and also had a 5th in the shot with Annie Rose 6th in discus.
Congratulations to the girls’ squad who enjoyed their post-event McDonalds all the more in the knowledge that their final place was secure! Good luck to them for Tullamore on 14 August.
Once again the men’s team was badly hit by availability and were not in contention to qualify for the final from the 8 teams present. However there was a great performance from Brendan Murphy who missed his PB by 0.04s when placing second in the 400mH in 54.08s. He was later 5th in the 200m. Jonny McWhinney was 4th in the Shot and also 5th in the discus in a season’s best of 31.34m.
