There was a fantastic return of three individual bronze medals plus one team bronze from the small squad of City of Lisburn athletes who made the trip to Killybegs, Co Donegal today for the NI and Ulster Even age-group cross-country championships. As well as medals athletes were after qualifying spots (top 12 per event) for the All-Ireland championships.
In the Under 12 races over 1500m Kate Gourley was third from a field of 66 in another good performance from the promising youngster while Sean Terek should be pleased with his 18th place in the boys’ race from a field of 69.
At U14 level Madison Bowyer made the decision to run despite having her lower arm in a cast after breaking her wrist last week. Maddie of course was the U13 champion from last year but with the injury obviously slowing her down here she still managed a brave 7th place in her 2500m race to ensure safe qualification for the All-Ireland’s in Sligo at the end of November. Maddie did receive a well-deserved bronze medal as part of the Co. Antrim team which was third.
At U16 level (3500m) there was a pair of bronzes for Lisburn from Zoe Carruthers and Jonathan Whan. Both athletes are known for their strong performances on the mud and enhanced their reputation here. This completed a successful outing for the squad.
