LVAC Super 5 Meet 1

The Mary Peters Track was buzzing last Thursday night with a huge entry for the first of the superb Lagan Valley / Edwards and Co “Super 5” meets of 2011, where conditions were dry but cool. For many of the young City of Lisburn athletes it was their first outdoor competition of the season while for many more it was the chance to try some new events or even to experience a competition for the first time. Amongst the drama which saw two separate teams of paramedics at the track at one stage, Lisburn athletes collected a load of medals across the age-groups and there were many more noteworthy performances.
In the youngest “Mini” age-group for U11’s, cross-country star Kate Gourley produced a great run for second in the 1000m in a close race, but produced a fantastic turn of speed to also take a surprise silver in the 80m. The 80m sprint for boys in this age group also produced a medal for Lisburn with Ben Gibson 3rd ahead of team-mate Connla Ward who was 4th and also 4th again in the long jump. In the girls’ long jump Erin Fisher looks set to follow in the footsteps of her brother Ben with a great silver medal performance.
Lisburn has some talented young athletes in our U13 squad this year, including Alix Galbraith who was a double-medallist. She took bronze in the high jump and was denied gold in the shot only by the very last throw of the competition. In the same shot competition Sarah Woods took bronze (which made up for her disappointment at finishing 4th in the high jump), with Lauren Rea just missing a medal in 4th. This was great throwing by the Lisburn girls from over 20 competitors. On the track Therese Hilman was just outside 15 seconds when taking 5th place out of nearly 40 athletes in the 100m. The versatile Cameron Kelly was our star boy in this age-group with silver in the 100m and high jump.
The U15 events saw a number of strong performances from the Lisburn girls in particular. In the Long Jump Kathryn Case and hurdles champion Jane Anderson jumped extremely well to take silver and bronze respectively, from the field of over 30 entries, with Erin Quinn 6th. In the discus Caitlin Rose and Annie Alexander were 5th and 6th, both just a metre outside the medals. Katie Larmour has clearly wintered well, flying to a huge PB of 13.61s for bronze in the 100m ahead of Erin Quinn in 4th while there was a good PB from Kathryn Case too. Natalie Fair was 8th in the 1500m. Nikolai Koplewsky was best of the Lisburn boys in the 100m in 6th place ahead of Jack McComb and Ben Fisher, while Ben took 6th in the long jump.
The U17 category brought more medals for Lisburn with Aoibhin McManus a convincing winner in her speciality long jump. Multi-eventer Anna McImoyle took a good 3rd in this event and looked sharp when placing 5th in the 100m in 13.78s. Josh Garnham placed 6th in the boys’ 100m in this age-group.
Finally in the senior events Kathryn Wallace was close to her PB when placing 2nd in the hammer and later took silver again in the shot. For the men, Adam Hill got a silver in the long jump with silver again for Jonny McWhinney in the hammer.
So overall a successful evening not just for those mentioned above but also for many more Lisburn athletes who achieved PBs.
